Process:
Resin is such a versatile medium! You can use it to create the most beautiful designs and transform ordinary day to day objects into a piece of art.
Begin by laying down your wooden tray on a flat table, since the tray is flat and has depth you won’t need a separate level below it, you only have to make sure that your table is perfectly levelled.
Using a flat brush prime your tray with two coats of Camel Artist’s Acrylic Colour in Titanium White.
Cover your tray completely by painting all the corners and grooves. Don’t worry about your finish on the base since the resin will cover it entirely. If you wish to switch it up and use a contrasting colour for the frame of your tray now is the perfect time to do so.
While your tray is drying it’s time to mix your resin! Take your Haksons Resin & Hardener -Ultra Clear High Gloss Epoxy Resin Coat – Grade I and measure out the resin in a 3:1 ratio. Make sure you have your Powder-Free Disposable Gloves on before opening the bottle. If you find yourself struggling to open the bottles, just use a wooden stick to lift off the inner cap.
Using plastic measuring spoons, measure out our resin in a plastic container and mix it with a wooden stick until it’s streak-free. For this project, I used around 150 ml of resin.
Once 15 minutes are up and your resin is cured, divide it into separate paper containers. Add your Artist’s Acrylic Paint to each container. Begin by adding your paint little by little and stir it vigorously with your wooden sticks until the mixture is opaque.
Now onto creating your masterpiece! Unlike the Fluid Painting Coasters, your acrylic paint must be completely dry before you start pouring. Grab your resin containers at random and pour them in lines onto your tray to create the desired effect.
To create beautiful wave-like patterns take a clean wooden stick and mix the colours.
In order for the resin to completely coat your surface, tilt the tray in all four directions. Doing this will not only help get the resin into the corners but also create a more unique pattern as the colours will mix on their own.
Once you’re happy with your pattern it’s time to get rid of the bubbles! With your Artist Blow Torch on the lowest setting move in quick short strokes over your tray, make sure you don’t overheat the resin. I used the blow torch twice in five-minute intervals giving the resin sometime to cool off.
Cover your tray and leave it to set for 24 hours and there you have it! Your very own unique piece of functional art! Between your uses, clean the tray with a lint-free damp cloth.
